Rani Padmini

Rani Padmini

Rani Padmini, also known as Padmavati, was a legendary 13th–14th century queen of the Kingdom of Mewar, renowned across India for her extraordinary beauty. According to medieval texts and popular folklore, she was a princess from the Sinhalese kingdom (Sri Lanka) whose beauty was so captivating that it drew the attention of Rana Ratan Singh.

Her beauty was described as exceptional and almost divine-so fair that, as local tales say, if she had paan (betel leaf), one could see the juice flowing down her throat, emphasizing her translucent complexion and charm.

This legendary beauty became the cause of great conflict when Alauddin Khilji, the Sultan of Delhi, heard of her and laid siege to Chittorgarh to capture her, leading to a dramatic and tragic chapter in Indian history.

Rani Padmini’s story is not only about her physical beauty but also about her courage and sacrifice. Facing inevitable defeat, she chose to protect her honor and that of her people by committing jauhar (self-immolation), an act that immortalized her as a symbol of bravery and dignity.
