Chiaroscuro Oil Paintings
Chiaroscuro Oil Paintings.
Chiaroscuro is an Italian term meaning “light-dark” (chiaro = light, scuro = dark). In art, it refers to the use of strong contrasts between light and shadow to model three-dimensional forms, create depth, and add dramatic effect to a composition. The technique is especially notable when these contrasts are bold and prominent throughout the artwork.
The technique was fully developed during the Renaissance, particularly by Leonardo da Vinci in the late 15th century. Chiaroscuro became a hallmark of Baroque art, with artists like Caravaggio and Rembrandt using it for dramatic and emotional impact.
